As far as anyone knew, Chris Evans’ Captain America permanently hung up—or rather, handed off—his shield at the end of Avengers: Endgame. Anthony Mackie’s Sam Wilson has the shield now, though Mackie has been cagey recently about whether that means he is Captain America.
But Evans may not be entirely done with the role: According to Deadline, he’s considering a return to the MCU.
This is all rumor and vagueness, and of course Marvel hasn’t said a word. Sources tell Deadline that it’s unlikely there would be another Captain America-centric movie, but that Steve Rogers might turn up in someone else’s story, like how Robert Downey Jr.’s Iron Man became a mentor to young Peter Parker and continued to appear in ensemble films after Iron Man’s star run was done.
There are obviously endless possibilities in the sprawling MCU, whether in The Falcon and the Winter Soldier or some of the timeline/multiverse wackiness that seems to be winging towards us in Loki and Doctor Strange and the Multiverse of Madness. All this buzz could just be over a cameo. Deadline’s story specifies Evans is in talks to appear “in at least one Marvel property with the door open for a second film,” so in short, we know nothing concrete. It would be a shady move to take that shield back from Sam; that moment was one of the most powerful scenes in Endgame. But there are plenty of other ways to bring America’s ass back to the screen.
